Solasonach is a small independent knitwear design studio based in Dundee. It was started in 2017 by Jen McAlinden, the year she graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design right here in Dundee.
With her degree in Textile Design specializing in knitted textiles with integrated electronics Jen was fulfilling a long held ambition to run away from being a (rubbish) scientist and join the design world.
In the very beginning the idea was to produce one off statement jumpers that lit up with wee lights sewn in and soft textile wiring. This produced some pretty cool results, but was just a bit too artsy for real life.
Jen then started to take her original inspiration, mostly from various trips out to the beautiful unspoiled Lunan Bay and turn it into some slightly more down to earth, but none the less glamorous products.
Side note about Lunan Bay, it’s absolutely beautiful, has loads of space for the kids to run about, and more importantly to a single mum doing a second degree at art college, its almost completely free, diesel and snacks not withstanding.
The first 3 collections Solasonach offered were then born, Lunan, Ripples and Rockpools!
